Our lamps in the French Collection come from a factory established in the Jura Mountains of France in 1869, using machinery custom made, oddly enough, in Brooklyn, NY. The founding family still runs the factory. That original machinery, powered by the same falling mountain streams, still makes the finest oil lamps in the world. The heart of an oil lamp is in its burner.
Lighting with oil lamps reached its peak in the 1880's in Europe with the development of two new burner systems - the revolutionary Kosmos, and its cousin the Matador. Each of our lamps (except the earlier Vintner's model) is equipped with these burners; they are made of a springy solid brass alloy to last for years of daily use. Their tapered tube design accepts a broad flat cotton wick, forming it into a circle at the point where it is exposed to the flame. The Kosmos chimney is an integral part of the overall design, drawing air through and around the burning circle for a radiant, steady flame. They are efficient and compact as oil burners get.
These French lamps are clean and odorless when fueled by paraffin lamp oil (high quality kerosene may also be used). With only the occasional replacement of wick or chimney, these lamps will give decades of beautiful illumination.

With a pleasing low profile accented by concentric rings in the body and a sturdy carrying handle slotted for wall mounting, the Lamp Concierge has emerged as our most popular large lamp.
LAMP MAITRESSE
Equipped with an elegant bombe chimney or etched ball shade and Kosmos cylindrical chimney, this little lamp maintains an unobtrusive presence until it is needed; then it becomes prominent, providing a light source exceeding conventional store kerosene lamps.
LAMP PATRONNE
The graceful pedestal base of this brass lamp elevates the burner so that abundant light is dispersed throughout the room. The large fuel capacity means a longer burn time.

Our newest addition. Crafted by an Eastern European master who still adheres to the ancient tradition of passing a trade from father to son.
